WOW!!

The Bandits rolled through the Winter Worlds in Las Vegas last weekend enroute to a 6-0 record, and the Championship trophy!

This was definately the biggest win of the year for the Bandits. Home team for all six games, Keith should have been in the sports book instead of on the field. As Thurston Howell said, "This was major flippage."

The first five games saw the Bandits come from behind in the bottom of the seventh for one run wins! Friday saw them beating Wongs and Texas Mission. Saturday morning was a victory over the B.C. Maurauders setting up an evening game against the powerful Four Seasons. Last time these two teams met, Four Seasons scored 7 runs in the bottom of the seventh for a win. This time it was the Bandits who came from behind, despite a courtesy running error and a batting out of order error that Four Seasons did not catch. Mark Reagin got the big hit to tie the game, and Dave Quenzler got the game winner. Whoa, what a heart stopper!

For once most of us did not have to get up early as we were now in the finals of the winners bracket against undefeated East Bay Oldies. The Oldies flexed their muscles early, scoring 5 runs in their first four at bats. But the Bandits managed to hang close, chipping away at the lead. By the time the bottom of the 7th rolled around they were only down by 5. Could they possibly manage another miracle? Of course they could! Unbelievably the Bandits scored 6 and advanced on the championship game, waiting for the winner of the Oldies / Mudhens game.

The Mudhens whipped the Oldies, setting up the finals. The Mudhens managed to hang close early, but this time there would be no come from behind victory for the Bandits. It wasn't needed. Tucson Bandits, Winter World Champs 2008. Bring on the Tournament of Champions!

CURSE OF THE FU MANCHU

The Bandits probably played their worst ball of the year at the World Championships in Phoenix last weekend. Going just 1 and 4, they lost three straight and were the first team eliminated from the tournament.
Though they were in every game in the 7th inning, lack of runs and poor defense plagued them in all five games.
There were signs of brilliant defense at times, but the lack of runs really hurt. A bright spot was Mark Reagin who continued to pound the ball to all fields.
Next up are the Winter Worlds in Vegas, Nov. 21st, 22nd and 23rd.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKKEEPERS!

Congratulations on a hard fought third place finish in Salt Lake City. The Bandits had gone 0-5 in their first Major tournament in Reno. In Salt Lake, that grew to 0-7 after losing our first two on Friday afternoon. Then, everyone got hot at the same time, starting on Friday night. The bats were scorching the ball and we rolled through the losers bracket after losing to Double Play on Saturday morning. We beat some really good teams, sending home the number one seed, Double Play. We also knocked out the Coyotes, MTC and the Arizona MOB.

Six players hit over .700. Kudos to Mike Swank and Mark Reagin for making the All-Tournamnet team. Both hit .778.

Tucson is up next on August 23rd and 24th.

STREAK ENDS IN RENO

The Bandits tournament winning streak came to a grinding halt in Reno. This was their first big test at the Major level and they were competative. Every game was decided in the 7th inning. The 0-5 record could just have easily been 5-0. The Bandits lost three of their games by one run.

Missing key players, Bobby, Steve, Denny and Rip made a difference. Also Keith was not available. Steve Marshall made his coaching debut!

On a positive note, playing at the new Golden Eagle Complex was spectacular. This place was beautiful. I cannot wait to play there again.
Oh, and did you know Mark got a haircut?

HEARD AROUND THE DUGOUT .....PRESCOTT

"How do I get to the dugout from the snackbar?"

"We gotta back each other up, everytime!!"

"You can't coach stupid!"

Many things about "dipping".

"I noticed the infield was playing back, so I layed one down."

"Plenty of room! You're alright! Plenty of room!" (crash)

Guys, (and ladies) I can't remember them all. Feel free to click on "post comments" at the bottom of each post. Then you could help me out with these. Niles, this means you!

HO HUM....BANDITS WIN AGAIN

The Bandits can now boast to being the best senior team in the state, after beating The MOB and CJ&S two times each in the annual Tom Tobin Memorial held in Prescott May 17th and 18th.

After an easy win over Rusty's to open the days competition on Saturday morning, The Bandits held on to nip the Arizona MOB 20-19 in a nail biter. They then easily whipped CJ&S 26-19 to close out the day and earning the number one seed.

Sunday morning The Bandits watched CJ&S upset the heavily favored MOB in the first game of the double elimination. That meant The Bandits would face The Express at 9:15 a.m. The Bandits started quickly, building a lead, but could not hold it. CJ's, fought back and actually tied the score in the top of the 7th inning. Cutting down the lead run at the plate shifted Mr. Momentum back to The Bandits. Tied in the bottom of the 7th, Dave Clark reached on a single up the middle. With one out, Dave Niles dashed CJ's hopes of another upset with a walk off home run!

The Bandits then waited to see who they would play for the championship as The MOB and The Express went at it again. The stunning loss to us must have taken the wind out of CJ's sail. They were run ruled by the MOB.

This set up a rematch and you can bet The MOB was set for revenge. They jumped to an early lead, homering often. But most of the home runs were solo shots and it came back to haunt them. This time it was the Bandits who came from behind, scoring 5 in the bottom of the 6th to take a 3 run lead. In the 7th, The MOB went down one, two, three and The Bandits won 24-21 to take their fourth tournament in a row!

If All-Tournies were selected the following players would have made it............

Mark Reagin .810
Denny Bailey .778
Keith Wilson .778
Paul Rosthenhausler .765
Mike Swank .739
Dave Niles .708

We hit .689 as a team, our best effort yet! Rock 'N Reno is up next, our first true test as a Major team.

BREAKING NEWS

Based on their season so far the Bandits have been bumped up to Major, from AAA. This comes as no shock to coach Keith Wilson, who expected it after winning the Spring Worlds in April. "I kind of saw it coming." Keith said when told of the news.

Unlike C,J & S Express who were also promoted, (causing their coach to immediately whine loud and long about it), the Bandits look forward to competing against the best at the Rock 'N Reno tournament in two weeks.

BANDITS CONTINUE TO ROLL

The Tucson Bandits continued their winning streak by taking the Southwest Classic, April 24th, 25th and 26th in Tucson. This time they did it the hard way, coming through the losers bracket to double-dip The Desperados on Sunday. The Desperados, out of Albuquerque, were the number one seed and undefeated on Sunday. They had also beaten the Bandits on Friday and Saturday. Newly promoted from AA, they were a very good team.

But the Bandits got hot on Sunday, crushing 50 Caliber, also out of New Mexico, 21-7. They then whipped The Desperados 24-10 forcing the "if" game. Getting great defense and timely hitting, they held on for a 15-9 victory.

As mentioned above, defense was the name of the game this weekend. Double plays were turned by the infield that quieted rallies time and time again.

Kudos to pitcher Mark Reagin for stellar defense up the middle!

The team hit .617 for the tournament which was our best average so far this year. The following players were our All-Tourney selections.................

Mark Reagin .720

Steve Gobrecht .679

Paul Rosthenhausler .659

Randy Robison .640

Wade Schneider .611

Dave Niles, Mike Swank, and Bobby Rosthenausler also hit over .600

BANDITS TAKE CASA GRANDE

After a sluggish start on Saturday, and an early morning loss on Sunday to Just For Fun, the Bandits bats woke up and they took three straight games when they counted in Casa Grande on April 5th and 6th.

Finishing 2 and 2 in the seeding games, the Bandits won the games they needed to win. A come from behind win against the Buzzards got things going. Then the Bandits run ruled Agave sending them into the championship against Klimate Kings. The Bandits jumped out to a big lead, homering early and often. They then held on as Klimate King mounted a comeback.

Highlights of the weekend..................

Dave Niles being awarded the prestigous "Hit Me Here" award. Dave also played a flawless outfield, highlighted by a throw that the umpire called "illegal" on.

Mark Reagin and Mike Gerber going down on strikes. But that's already been forgotten.

The penalty box, with Rip, Mark and Steve Marshall serving time!

The top hitters for this tournament were..............

Denny Bailey .824
Dave Clark .773
Mark Reagin .727
Mike Swank .696
Mike Gerber .619
Rip Cortes .619

Next up is Tucson.

BANDITS TAKE SPRING WORLDS

The Tucson Bandits posted a 5-1 record enroute to winning the Spring Worlds in Palm Springs, and became the first 50 AAA team to qualify for the 2009 Tournament of Champions.

Defense was the name of the game for the Bandits this weekend. The addition of Dave "Q" Quenzler, at second base solidified an already tough infield. The infield turned 8 double plays and 2 triple play! Oops, make that 1 triple play. (sorry Big D). Outstanding glove work by Mark "Psycho" Reagin, Paul "Baby" Paul Rosthenhausler, shortstop Mike Swank, Q, and Dave Niles kept the Bandits in every game. The team also welcomed another big hitter, Mike Gerber.

Their only loss was on day one to Top Gun III by one run. Going into Sunday the Bandits faced Arizona rival C,J & S Express with the winner advancing to the championship game. The game was a classic with the lead changing hands several times. The Bandits prevailed 21-20 in a game that will be remembered. It was then on to face Top Gun again in a winner take all format.

The Bandits bats quickly came alive, jumping on Top Gun for a 17-8 lead going into the open inning. But Top Gun would not quit, rallying for seven runs, before finally losing 17-15. The Bandits had won the tourney and were excited about qualifying again for the TOC in Winterhaven.

The following players were selected to the All-Tournament team. Keith wanted to point out that the entire team played great and we were only allowed 5 selections.

Denny Bailey .750
Dave Clark .684
Dave Niles ,684
Mark Reagin .667
Steve Gobrecht .667

Kudos to Mike and Rip who both hit .600. Kudos also to Wade and Rip who came up with huge pinch hits in the Express game. As a team we hit .600. Way to go guys!

Tournament of Champions 2008

The first big test of the year was the Tournament of Champions in Winterhaven, Florida, in February of 2008. The team earned the right to attend by winning the Southwest Classic in Tucson in December of 2007.

Expectations were high, and the team was the #1 seed going into the double elimination on Saturday morning. But the normally high scoring club had their bats go silent and wound up finishing a disappointing 4th.
